It Takes Two, Baby! It certainly does when it comes to singing duets – and two of the best duet-singing couples in South Australia would have to be husband and wife team, Rohan Watts and Melanie Smith. Their latest venture, It Takes Two! is a simple enough concept: 12 of the greatest love duets from the 1950s through to the 1980s. Given the voices of Watts and Smith, every number is a standout. But there are little gems hidden throughout: Nat King Cole and Natalie Cole’s Unforgettable is just that; Mel Smith let’s us into her childhood memories with Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram’s Somewhere Out There (from An American Tail); we are given the time of our lives with, you guessed it, I’ve Had The Time Of My Life; and the longest, bangingest rock duet of all time, Meatloaf and Ellen Foley’s Paradise By The Dashboard Light. Watts introduces each number with small, sometimes unknown, tidbits about the upcoming duet. Watts is a consummate showman and both he and Smith obviously love what they do – and we love them for it. They both sing up a storm. Let’s not forget their electrifying band: Victor Oria (Keyboards and Backing Vocals), Julius Sicoy (Guitar), Tim Wilsdon (Bass and Backing Vocals) and Brody Green (Percussion and Backing Vocals). These guys are fantastic and would very likely be musos’ musos. Kudos must also go to Sound Technician Tom Bayford. The balance was spot on for the entire show, with vocals in particular being crystal clear. The venue itself is a good space and if you get a chance, see any of the shows performing there during Fringe. With so much going on during Fringe, the main focus seems to be on international and interstate shows. Please don’t forget our local talent of which quite a few are performing during Fringe. It Takes Two! is the perfect example of what great homegrown talent we are lucky to have here in South Australia.
