Improvisation or Improv, as it is more commonly known, is a complex ‘tool’ in an actor’s ‘workbox’. It can be described as ‘making things up as you go along’. But, it is indeed a finely honed craft that not everyone can pull off successfully. Changing Jennifers, South Australia’s longest running improv group can and do wonderfully (probably why they are the longest running). The four team members are Eden, Sam, Griff and Will. They are the Fantastic Four of maniacal mayhem.
Their show Oscar-Winning Improv gives the guys a chance to present a film the way they think it should have been, with non-stop hysterical laughs. The audience get to chose two envelopes, numbered 1 to 16, and once they have been given clues to what year those films were nominated and what Oscar(s) they won, one envelope is then chosen for the group to perform the first 3 minutes of the original script and then after that – go hell for leather making up their version. The show picked for the night of my review was (drum roll, please) Disney’s Frozen. A classic animated feature presented by only four males – good luck with that, guys!
These guys know what they are doing and gave a Master Class in improv. There was absolutely no ‘blocking’ (just giving a ‘yes/no’ answer to a question thereby blocking the other actor’s ability to carry on) occurring and the team work involved was very impressive indeed.
Each of the four have attributes that stand-out making the sum of the parts whole: looking like a demented Andrew Denton, Eden twists and turns and does evil well; Sam has a gloriously rubber face coupled with eye-popping hilarity (and breaks into laughter fairly easily, which really adds to the fun); Griff can modulate his voice to form all types of sounds (for those old enough to remember the Police Academy movies, think Michael Winslow); and Will is the almost sensible one (but don’t worry, he’s not too sensible).
Improv is difficult to do and review as no two shows will be the same. But one thing that will remain a constant with the Changing Jennifers is that they will make you laugh and laugh and laugh and…
And the Oscar goes to the Changing Jennifers – yaaaay!!
