Garbology is not just a science; these three bumbling Dummies have also made it into a highly entertaining art form with a Looney Tunes inspired imagination. Trash Test Dummies is a long-time Adelaide Fringe favourite for kids and for good reason. The humour is slapstick and physical with precision timing.
While this talented trio is the visual equivalent of dosing your kids up with sugar before a road trip, they ground their silliness with delightful adult references as they run through their paces, including a wheelie bin version of Chariots Of Fire and the Nutcracker ballet.
High-octane acrobatics and audience participation have the young viewers eating out of their hands, but including a war skit three-quarters of the way through the show is a poor choice: it deflates the audience like an Acme Inc balloon. Perhaps it’s sensitivity to current world events, or maybe today’s parents are more aware of the toxicity of performative violence, but either way, the guys have some work to do to recover. It’s a credit to their skill that they do so and with the aplomb of a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Perfect for introducing the really young to circus shows (because fidgeting in your seat is all part of the theatricals) Trash Test Dummies is a super example of a great show for all the family.
Trash Test Dummies Circus, Garden Of Unearthly Delights, 22--25 February, 29 February--3 March, 7--11 March, 14--17 March, times vary.
