In the TikTok generation, where we scroll our phones while watching a movie and the media vyes for what little attention span we have in this modern world, one Fringe production has accepted its fate and cut Shakespeare’s most famous work down to a mere 15 minutes. Hamlet in 15 Minutes is directed, adapted and features Peter Goers as The Player (or MC), who brings a mish mash of actors to the cute Barbra Hardy Garden, tucked away among the Holden Street Theatres. All the highlights of the show are there, keeping only the well-known speeches and scenes and disposing of the rest. Hamlet has the matinee idol looks (although perhaps not the charm), Gertrude is clueless as always, Ophelia is suitably crazy, and the fight scenes are still ridiculous. The performers attack their roles with gusto with little time to actually worry about character or meaning. There are some funny sight gags and plenty of over the top death scenes. The script itself is similar to the Hamlet section of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield including the sped up encores of 1 minute and 10 seconds. Beware the audience participation and don’t even think about letting your mobile phone ring for fear of losing it to the Mitre 10 bucket. It’s fun, silly and a decent way to fill in gaps between shows at Holden Street. They’re doing a ridiculous number of performances throughout the Fringe so it’s an easy one to add to your night out… who knows the performance you see could be different again in this loosely improved outing.
