Life is a cabaret, old chum as Broadway made its way to little old Adelaide. Following a sell-out run in 2023, An Evening on Broadway returned to the Adelaide Fringe with a reimagined show complete with new songs, performers, and arrangements. The brainchild of creatives Daniel Sherwood, Claudia Finn, and Lisa Bondarenko of Viva Performing Arts, a South Australian performing arts programme, the 2024 production featured a selection of magical hits from one hundred years of musical theatre. Featuring a supremely talented cast and with a divine live orchestral accompaniment, Once and For All from Newsies opened the show on opening night at the Star Theatres. It was a spirited introduction to the almost three-hour, two-act extravaganza. Act One showcased numerous solo and ensemble performances and had the audience toe-tapping in time to the music and singing along. With songs from musical theatre productions, including The Scarlet Pimpernel, Frozen, Miss Saigon, and Six, among others, there was something for everyone. Highlights included If I Were a Rich Man (Fiddler on the Roof), Screw Loose (Cry Baby the Musical), and Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down) from Hamilton. A kids’ ensemble medley from Annie concluded the first Act. The calibre of talent was nothing short of amazing. Act Two shared songs from Matilda, Evita, Phantom of the Opera, Hairspray, The Little Mermaid, School of Rock, Mean Girls, and Les Misérables. High points were the ensemble’s rendition of When You’re an Addams (The Addams Family). Also, the hilarious A Musical (Something Rotten!), which David Mitchell and Ian Brown absolutely nailed. A vivid and animated Mamma Mia medley concluded a marvellous night of entertainment. While technical issues did somewhat mar the show – microphones cutting in and out and the lighting technician perhaps requiring an extra rehearsal to learn their cues – the cast did not let it hinder their performance. The old adage of ‘the show must go on’ was exemplified with class. Kudos go to the troupe for their utter professionalism amidst these minor difficulties. An Evening on Broadway is a must-see production for fans of musical theatre. Catch it while you can!
