When it comes to the Fringe Festival, what could be more classic than a solidly entertaining display of acrobatics and humour, all wrapped up in the neat bow of outstanding performers? Throw in the fact that said performers happen to be a group of unbelievably fit men who spend much of the show in pretty minimal clothing, and you’re probably well on your way to a winner.

‘Godz’, presented by the men of Headfirst Acrobatics, was exactly this, and it was well worth the hype and large crowds it drew.

Headfirst Acrobatics are no newbies to the Fringe scene, and they have consistently delivered outstanding shows that are sure to delight. This year’s theme was based around Greek Mythology, and consequently audiences were treated to feats of acrobatics while following along loosely with a group of three Greek Gods of old, along with Zeus’s demi-God son Hercules on his journey to join the ranks of the other Gods.
The show is not only visually stunning, but also incredibly funny. The performers know how to read a crowd and their engagement with the audience always adds some hilarious gags, even in relatively quieter moments when the performers in question aren’t necessarily centre stage. This focus on staying in character and reacting fluidly to the other performers and audience members is one of the things these men do best, and it’s one of the elements that always makes their shows stand out.

Having said that, their circus skills and acrobatics alone are well-worth the price of admission. The show covers a variety of different feats, whether on the floor, in the air, or balanced precariously on an impossibly high stack of furniture. This year’s show also featured some clever acts with a whip, which was a novel and interesting addition to the kinds of gymnastic feats audiences have come to expect from this group. And yes, they definitely had fun playing with the innuendo this act provided, and so did the audience.

‘Godz’ was another home run for this experienced and impeccable team. Their cheeky humour, charming engagement with the crowd, exemplary skills, polished performances, and overall fantastic execution resulted in a show which was an absolute joy to watch. While their season is over for the year, this group should be top of your list for future Fringe seasons. ‘Godz’, like the shows which came before it, was guaranteed to be a good time that will have audiences laughing and gasping by turns. If you only get your friends together for one show, make it this one!
