Amos Gill is currently Australia’s best and funniest stand-up comedian! Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of seeing a lot of Aussie stand-up performers and none have brought the amount of tear-inducing laughs, clever observations and crossing-the-line humour as this man does. It’s come to the stage that when the Adelaide Fringe guide is released, Amos Gill is the first person I check to see if he’s putting on a show. Always well prepared, always perfectly structured, this is a guy who hides his amazing comedic talent behind a laconic, knockabout Aussie demeanour. With a packed Friday night crowd in attendance at Gluttony, Gill was once again in fine form. Discussing his family life, living in L.A. and his thoughts on words being more important to people than their actions dictate, every joke seemed to have at least an ounce of truth to it. And, as Gill mentions himself, this is probably why his comedy is so divisive and offends so many people. With his show The Pursuit of Happy (ish), Gill is an equal-opportunity offender. Whether you’re a girl or a guy, vote Liberal or Labor, are rich or poor, he has jokes that will make you howl, cringe, move uncomfortably in your seat or just laugh out loud (as I did throughout this show). The throughline of this 60-minute performance is that we are all in the ‘pursuit of happiness’ but will never fully find it because it’s unattainable. With advertising, Instagram, and people all around you all trying to prove how happy you can be, people have seemed to have lost their way in just being happy with where they are right now in life. Never bringing back the same show to the Fringe twice demonstrates that Gill never rests on his laurels and, if you’ve read my past reviews on Amos Gill shows, you’ll see that his performances never drop or waiver. Stand-up comedy is a tough game, but he makes it all look so easy. As seedoeatreview discovered, a ticket to an Amos Gill show guarantees an hour of non-stop laughs! Five Stars *****
