You might think that in the last week of Fringe 2023, and especially following a long weekend, Adelaidians would be all Fringed out. Not so at the Bally, Gluttony, Tuesday night for the premiere of Dean Misdale's Life's a Drag. While not a sold out performance, the intimate Bally was full enough to create the perfect atmosphere for this up-close-and-personal drag cabaret comedy performance from winner of the Perth Fringe 2022 best cabaret and variety show. Taking centre stage in a blue sequined, figure-hugging, dress, Misdale's silver stilettos and blonde beehive brought to mind a big, beautiful cabaret Barbie. Kicking off with classics from Barry Manalow and the Priscilla soundtrack, Misdale's voice was powerful, rich and hit all the right notes. As well as disco classics, Misdale included hits from Dolly Parton and Tina Turner, ballads from Disney and a few originals set to notable tunes, most memorably one about a love of eating KFC. As any fan of drag cabaret knows, it's not all about the music; witty stories must also form part of the show. In this regard, Misdale excelled, striking the perfect balance between vulnerability and vulgarity. There were stories of how he had to find "a real job" during Covid lock downs (BTW 'Covid hygienist' is code for 'cleaner') before landing coveted roles in We Will Rock You and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, performing to over 2000 people per night. There were also stories about bad kissing and Tupperware, being a "Perthonality", and battles with obesity. Misdale deserves much praise for balancing the personal with what he describes as "bullsh*t and f*ckery". That's right, it's queer drag so do expect a plethora of f-bombs and sex jokes — this definitely is not for the kiddies, but will appeal to the kid in every adult. A fun, funny night out with audience sing-alongs, this was a little like karaoke led by a true pro who wanted everyone to have a gorgeous night out. We did. Thanks. And for all those reading this and wondering what to see in the last week of Fringe, do go and catch this fabulously funny, talented diva.
