That Boy – The Studio at Holden Street Theatres
From the moment you walk into the theatre and survey the set you get a sense of the turmoil that is about to ensue. Sitting atop a pile of games in Tom’s bedroom is a game called Trouble. And yes, it’s a portent of things to come.
Tom, “That Boy”, is 8, and more than a handful. A cross between the Energiser Bunny and a Tasmanian Devil says his Mum Sarah, (Martha Lott) who sadly at Tom’s school has become known as “That Mum”.
Every Mother of young children will identify with Sarah’s entrance and her exasperation at the detritus of Tom’s life, spread all over the floor and bed. Somewhere among it all, is Tom’s precious Monkey. As Sarah searches for it, tidying as she goes, she engages the audience in a raw, honest and emotional conversation about the challenges of being a single Mother of two children, one of whom is clearly “on the spectrum” yet not bad enough to qualify for any special help.
Sarah’s battle is therefore two-fold. Firstly, with a child who is loved, but tests everyone’s patience to the max, and indeed his own sense of self-worth, and secondly, with a system that refuses to help.
The reason for Sarah’s need to find Monkey emerges and our relief when she does so is palpable.
Martha Lott’s ability to connect with the audience and hold it in the palm of her hand during the course of a 60-minute monologue is remarkable. While it is heart wrenching at times, there is warmth and humour. Highly recommended.
That Boy was conceived by developed over a number of years by Lott and a team of talented South Australian writers. This is its World Premiere.
