Don’t be put off by the current controversy surrounding all things Harry Potter. This show is full of laughs, a little bit naughty and a great show for fans of the franchise: but it is a parody so hopefully they won’t be sued. Set during the time of Hitler, when Tom Riddle was a teenager at Hogwarts, this show is a different type of Hogwarts story. An ensemble of seven performers, each with charisma and skill, fill the audience with laughter and applause. There were stand out performances across the cast, with a beautiful and unexpected operatic ballad from the actor playing Hagrid. The performers playing Tom Riddle and Muffin (his love interest) were energetic and dedicated performers. The storyline was unique, and while characters we know were present the story itself was quite unexpected. It is a little crass and there are some adult themes, so while it is a Hogwarts parody, it should be noted that it is recommended for mature audiences. At times it was hard to follow the story, however the music and comedy kept the audience’s attention. Some of these unexpected plot twists and songs were what kept the show interesting. While the story drifted in the middle, it ended solidly. There were a few times where articulation meant it was hard to hear all that was being sung, and this made it difficult to understand. There were also some mic and lighting issues, such as darkness at the front of the stage, and some missed mic cues. The performers, however, took this in their stride and modified where needed. The dancing and staging were clever and integral to the show. The lighting colours and staging played a huge role in maintaining and changing the mood. This show deserves a trip to Gluttony.
