Scotland! by the award-winning theatre troupe, The Latebloomers, is an hour of hilarious clowning, impressive physical theatre, dance, mime and audience participation, providing an indulgently silly night out at the Fringe that is guaranteed to have you doubled-over in laughs while also revelling in Scottish pride. As the lights dim, the three comedic performers storm the stage with energetic movement and sound while covered head-to-toe in Scottish tartan patterns – tartan pants, shorts, suspenders, shirts, blazers, ties, hats, and, of course, a tartan kilt paired with a sporran (traditional Scottish pouch/bag) on the show’s main protagonist. The audience is then taken on a Scottish journey as the three performers act out traversing the rugged and windy Scottish Highlands, fishing in its glorious lochs, hunting deer in its lush forests, and fighting bravely against the English cavalry. These scenes are comedically performed through group collaboration clowning, acts of physical theatre, mime, exaggerated facial expressions and reactions, and impressive sound effects (picture the native Scottish wildlife and imitating bagpipes). There is also (literal) knee-slapping melodical fun alongside spontaneous Ceilidh dancing, plus plenty of audience interaction and participation, which is an area the actors really shine in. These include sharing flasks of whiskey, eye-covering acrobatic stunts, and hilariously hunting audience members, as well as the simple humorous scolding of latecomers to the show. A shout out must go to the enthusiastic audience members who give their all to their roles, but they are also provided with a warm and welcoming environment on stage they feel safe in thanks to the professionalism of the performers. A mention must also be made of Sam Dugmore’s glorious vocals, as throughout the night he dramatically belts out picture-painting lyrics from songs, like The Bonnie Banks o' Loch Lomond, The Wild Mountain Thyme, and the country’s unofficial national anthem, Flower of Scotland. If you haven’t seen a show by The Latebloomers - a troupe of three performers from Australia, Sweden and the UK who met at the Jacques Lecoq International Theatre School in Paris – you really haven’t experienced the true Fringe. These performers have travelled the world with this Winner of the Weekly Award for Best Comedy at the Adelaide Fringe 2019, other group shows and individual award-winning performances, from the Paris Fringe to Italian arts festivals. The Latebloomers rarely disappoint, with their productions always providing safe choices for an enjoyable, laughter-filled time at the Adelaide Fringe. Scotland! is no exception to this, and is a great choice for both Scots, and those who love the country and accents, alongside those simply looking for an entertaining night out.
