Voyage on over to Adelaide Fringe venue, Fool’s Paradise at Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga if you’re a fan of seafaring songs and sounds. Melbourne’s multi-award-winning choir, The Shanties Choir are in town until Sunday 12 March for their salty show, Seamen The Sea Shanty Spectacular. The 11-piece choir take to the stage with their spectacular harmonies and bring a pop flare to both well-known and lesser-known shanties from across the globe, with a hint of sass. Across the 55 minutes spent with The Shanties Choir, tap along to the TikTok famous Wellerman, alongside Viking death poems, Canadian pirate ditties and even a raunchy fishermen song. The setlist is culturally diverse to say the least. Did you know that there are Indigenous seas shanties that originated in Darwin? We didn’t. There’s even a nod to South Australia in the mix. As with many shows, they have their highs and lows, and Seamen The Sea Shanty Spectacular is no exception. At times, the choreography was slightly unrefined, and the backing music was a touch too soft. The venue itself is quite large; a very big, darkened box if you will, and perhaps a more intimate space would have added to the seafaring ambiance with a tad of crowd-involvement to amplify the matey, togetherness feel. One Seamen The Sea Shanty Spectacular audience member shared that, “It was more of a performance than an experience.” That said, there was a return audience member front and centre who had enjoyed the show just the evening before – so if that isn’t a testament to The Shanties Choir, then we don’t know what is. It’s unclear which year, but the 11-piece choir also won the Adelaide Fringe Tour Read Award, and the Regional Arts Tour Ready Award. So, round up your crew of scallywags, get some rum in ya, and set sail for Seamen The Sea Shanty Spectacular.
