Welcome to Singapalooza! Choons and Moovs is here to bring the festival vibes and musical bangers for anyone looking for a more alternative Fringe experience away from the Garden. Headed by Tania Smith, a renowned DJ on the SA scene, this is two to three hours of musical fun where the crowd gets on board with mass-karaoke renditions of pop culture’s favourite tunes. Each night is a different theme: diva classics, R&B, boy bands and girl bands, naughties, you name it. The variety allows each participant to cater their experience to their own taste. I myself headed in for the 90s session (I can’t not go when a Savage Garden tribute is guaranteed!). The venue is an impressive choice for such an event. Cherry on Hindley Street is a swish new edition to the nightclub scene with a spacious basement area and bar, roomy enough for the crowd to get lost in the music. And with their opening night merely days before the launch of Singapalooza, it’s a great chance to experience the venue without being packed to the walls. Tania and her band of colourful helpers are vibrant and energetic as they amp up the crowd for each new song. They generously supply some novelty glasses and inflatable instruments to further add to the novelty. Between tracks, the crew play games where the audience gets to vote on the next song by singing it aloud. Guests are also invited up on stage to compete in sing-offs, one for the braver singers in the crowd. We’re even treated to an air guitar competition! There is tremendous energy everywhere and a strong sense of inclusivity. No one gets singled out and made to feel uncomfortable - hardly necessary when everyone there is clearly having a good time. The area is catered for both the hard-core rockers of the group and the quieter ones who’d rather stand in the back and relax with a drink in hand. It’s impressive just how much thought and effort has been put into this show: a simple premise perfectly executed. Choons and Moovs clearly knows their audience well, and are the embodiment of the phrase “if you build it they will come”. Ridiculous fun for anyone who enjoys their music sung loud, proud and in good company. FIVE STARS ***** Reviewed by Justine Hall
