Decades worth of magic expertise have culminated into Showmen Productions’ Adults Only Magic Show. Returning for its third year to the Adelaide Fringe this inventive performance combines the joy of magic with humour and showmanship.
Both Sam and Justin have upbeat and energetic personalities which allow them to make brilliant use of the audience, with the stage designed in such a way that the tricks performed on them are highly visible. The production has multiple sets that switch between sole acts, dual acts, and, those with audience members.
In many ways I did not know what to expect however the title suggests something slightly more titillating than what was delivered. The use of music was apt, the skills of both magicians apparent, and, their styles congenial. Nevertheless, it did feel like their performance was routine.
Despite this, it is still somewhat comforting to see traditional tricks performed in new settings, such as the coin trick, the guessing of answers, and, the straight jacket escape, The illusions carried out are the type of feats that simply let you enjoy, rather than try to uncover. For this reason, it is a great show to watch late at night.
With the show set to tour internationally in 2021 the duo’s figures speak to its success; the past few years have seen many of their shows sold out around Australia. It is a welcome break from magic shows dedicated to families and kids, with each volunteer receiving a drink voucher!
