Pop quiz, hotshot. There’s a bus, in a park. At Fringe Time. What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO?! This show was hilarious, from start to finish. Surprisingly faithful to the plot and script of the original movie, Speed: The Movie, The Play had its audience laughing and having a great time with zero moments to stop and catch your breath. Set in an ex-STA bus, more than one audience member experienced flashbacks to their school days. But I don’t ever recall having this much fun on the way to or from school. Everything happened so fast! Not only are they squeezing a two hour movie into a one hour live performance, but the energy this cast has is outstanding. And they’ve obviously fine-tuned this show over many performances, because they were flawless with their delivery, unexpected instances didn’t faze them, and no-one faltered at any point. Even an early March Adelaide thunderstorm couldn’t stop these guys. With lighting, thunder, and rain all around, we were delayed by no more than 15 minutes. Respect out to the Sound Engineer doing his job from underneath a tarp. It’s really hard not to love everything this production attempted. Comical special effects, hysterical character portrayals, and side-splitting delivery of a movie script that’s not known for its humour… They pulled it off well. There’s no poignant message behind this show, no hidden meaning, just a cast and crew who’ve created a great show out of a movie that was (let’s be honest), highly entertaining but a bit dumb. Their 2023 Fringe season has ended, but they hope to be back next year with other pop-culture inspired works. Make sure you keep an eye out for them.
