As a Fringe show reviewer, I try to avoid going to an opening night of a show so the performers have a chance to get comfortable with their acts and fix any technical issues that may arise. Acknowledging this up front, I’ll be reviewing Steampunk Circus wholly and solely on their performances from Sunday night… and boy oh boy were they good! Hailing from W.A., Aria and Fiona created Steampunk Circus to showcase talents from all around Australia who have a penchant for the flickering flame of fire. And in this world premiere show, you’ll be seeing some truly remarkable, jaw-dropping acts that not only tame this combustible element but put it to the sword… literally! Aria adds a really cool vibe to Steampunk Circus, writing her own songs that fit the fiery performances and singing them in an almost operatic style, creating an otherworldly feeling to the show. If you haven’t heard of fire performer Jay before, she’ll certainly command your attention, effortlessly spinning, twirling and mastering props of all kinds in an eye-opening display of skill and flair. I won’t embarrass myself trying to name the props Jay uses but just look at the pics in this review to see how easy she makes it all look. His emceeing may need a little work but Damon doesn’t need any help in the fire department, as his fire battle with Jay (much like a rap battle but with fire instead) is one of the highlights of the show. This guy literally breathes fire and will leave you gasping for oxygen with his remarkable skills. When the show needed some energy and intensity it came in the form of Miss Eli Fury. This woman brought the heat without even bringing the actual heat (that came later) and her aerial chain performance was as painful to watch as it was beautiful. And then there is Kraken Fire! If you’re looking for confidence, skill and an act that will blow your socks off, Kali (Kraken Fire) is the one to look out for. She makes the impossible look possible as the fire seems to bow down to this sorceress of the flame. Fiona Fyrebird is the everywoman of the group. Seemingly able to control any weapon in her hands she jumps from fire swords to fire sticks to fire fans with ease and, along with being quite the show woman, I think she’d be mighty handy in battle too. Steampunk Circus definitely has the potential to be a five-star show, and with a bit more time (in front of live audiences), tweaking and polishing it will certainly get there. A show that is blindingly spectacular and will warm your heart, walk towards the light and check it out this Adelaide fringe season. Enjoy! FOUR STARS ****
