Nina Simone’s story is well known and well told, and by many. In fact, when I caught the last minute wind of Apphia Campbell’s Black Is The Color Of My Voice playing for a limited season at The Adelaide Fringe, I did an all nighter (sort of) and re watched the 2015 documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? The re watch was not because I’m not familiar with Simone’s work, I am and greatly so. I needed to be reminded of the genius and immense complexity of Simone, and ensure that Campbell’s play set out to do the same.
