With a solid format and good talent, Musicology for the Inept had all the makings of a great show. And by most accounts that was exactly what we got. Two hosts with their own charm who probed and guided their guest, resulting in a captivating interview and a lovely final performance. The hosts seemed quite comfortable in their roles, although they were better when ad-libbing. They gave us some pre-prepared material that felt over-rehearsed, but I guess there’s a fine line between that and underdone. One seemed a little starstruck by their special guest, but hell, it’s Fringe time, we should all be so lucky as to meet our favourite performers, never mind sing with them. Their surprise special guest was quite a get too. We were treated to an intriguing interview with comedy superstar Stephan K. Amos, and I say “intriguing”, because our interviewers took a deliberate approach of seeking Amos’ vulnerabilities, with which they succeeded. It did feel like there was too much focus on Amos’ race and sexuality though. He appeared to feel the same for a split second there, but kept things on track like a true professional. The show concluded with Amos and the hosts singing together, which is not a scenario that Amos finds most comfortable, despite his recent appearance on Broadway in My Fair Lady. He sounded good though, with much thanks to the support he received from his hosts in rehearsal, and indeed on stage. The venue was outstanding, which makes it even more of a shame that they seemed to have been relegated to the loading dock for their performance space. The stage was also too small for the set, making fluid movement impossible, although they handled this well. Musicology for the Inept ran for a very short and already concluded season at this year’s Fringe, but I suspect we’ll see them again next year with more surprise guests.
