It’s the United Nations of stand-up comedy, showcasing multicultural comedians in a colourful collaboration. After finding No Fixed Address Lane off Rundle Mall and traversing two flights of stairs, to the Laugh Lounge, Saturday’s late night audience settled in for an hour from upcoming and established multicultural entertainers. Although we didn’t know which comics would be performing, the Fringe program’s blurb had guaranteed at least two acts and lots of laughs. The roster for Saturday was ably and hilariously introduced by MC Sam Gabreselassie, a Melbourne-based Comedian and Physio. Born in Sudan, grew up in New Zealand, of Ethiopian descent, Sam was actually the highlight of the evening for this reviewer. His jokes were well timed and on point. He got a great sense of the room and created a fantastic environment for the rest of the hour. We were then lucky to be treated to another four comedians/entertainers: Frankie Marcos, a Mexican Filipino who informed us he’d been in SA for five weeks staying at a backpacker’s hostel. Some hilarious tales of his Uber driving followed. Singapore-born Garry Johal had the room laughing along to his dating exploits and Karan Singh performed some magic where guessing an audience member’s phone pin was entertaining, if not questionable whether a plant. Sandeep Totlani from Gold Coast literally rounded out the show, which represented a culturally diverse Australia showcasing that sharing a laugh about our similarities and differences brings us closer together. I highly recommend seeing more of Sam the Physio and commend this concept’s show.
