Riding high into Adelaide on the back of his four-octave range vocal cords, a bucket of awards and big ticket performances (He’s performed for the Beckhams, amongst a host of others), Leather Lungs – aka Jason Chasland on his nights off – is back with his new show: Higher Love. Acknowledging that we’ve all been through a collective trauma on top of our individual challenges, Higher Love is a deeply personal delve into Leather Lungs’ recent rocky romantic history. Mixing a blend of original and classic songs, Leather Lungs sashays the fine line between riotous comedy (try sitting through his version of Old McDonald with a straight face) and deeply reflective moments of tumultuous love lost (The Winner Takes It All). There’s something about this specific performance – perhaps family and friends in the crowd – that bring moments of real emotion bubbling to the surface. Those moments are quickly turned on their head by a cheeky microphone deep throat moment, or dramatic mic stand fondling. His message is that hard times are temporary and they may need a while to pass – and an enduring sense of humour – we are all able to move through them with the support of our special people. Comedy is clearly the medicine for Leather Lungs. It feels like there’s some nerves at the start, which is completely understandable given the very recent ending of the relationship that inspired Higher Love, but once that voice opens up, you can feel how much love and support is in this crowd for Leather Lungs. If you’ve been looking for some high drama musical drag, grab your tickets immediately for Higher Love as he only has a few shows remaining this season.
