As a parent, I’m always a little wary when choosing Fringe shows for the family to head along to. While some are 100% fabulous for the kids, us adults have to endure through it, not unlike a Wiggles concert. Because of this, I’m always seeking out performances or shows that will entertain or inspire the kids, while keeping the parents entertained too.

After three sold out seasons, it seems Star Academy have done it yet again, with their new show ‘Stars Got Talent’.

Performed by kids, for kids (and for adults too luckily!), this show has everything you could want in a daytime Fringe performance.

The family-friendly show is a fun take on Australia’s Got Talent, which follows a lighthearted story line, that prevents it from being “just” a kids dance concert.

It follows a range of talent acts who are all performing to win the Stars Got Talent TV show, with a judging panel, host with the most, and audience interaction. Ultimately, it’s the audience who get to choose the winner!

Stars Got Talent showcases the pure, vibrant talent that the cast posses, which could easily see them performing on the TV series that the show takes its namesake from.

The fast paced show is punchy, family friendly, has great costumes, catchy music and clever injections of humour.

In line with its talent show theme, there are multiple performances that show off the skills of the kids, with singing, acting, acrobatics and of course dance, which leaves you bursting with pride at how much talent this group posses.

The range of dance showcased was also impressive, which highlighted the range of skills the students at Star Academy learn, including tap, jazz, hip hop, acro, ballet and more. It was easily on par with many of the adult dance routines I’ve seen in Fringe shows in previous years.

The kids around us in the audience heartily enjoyed the comedic side of the show too, laughing out loud, in between bopping to all the songs, and mimicking the dance moves.

Stars Got Talent is an inspiring hour of power, which will leave you smiling, and your kids buzzing.

The show’s only weakness is that at 60 minutes, it runs on a little long, particularly for the younger audience members. The Man in the Mirror dance routine is quite a solemn one, and killed the mood a little, losing some of the younger kids interest, but overall it didn’t impact the joy of the show. Everyone left invigorated.

If Stars Got Talent is anything to go by, the Star Academy kids will have long performance careers ahead of them, and we hope to see them at Fringe (and on other stages) in the coming years.
