The highly demanding and complex nature of ballet is always fascinating to watch. It is however, not in any way more difficult or technical than contemporary dance with its themes and forms. Dance Alive, a prominent Adelaide dance company and school, displayed the complexities of these two styles in their show Sunset with Alive. As a school with classes for multiple age groups, the performance was split into a number of vignettes starting with the senior ballet dancers and then moved through the different age ranks and then onto a contemporary dance number. The contemporary piece in question, was strongly inspired by the schools globally recognised artistic director Rajane Garcia, who’s Brazilian heritage married with the pieces' environmentally and culturally charged themes. It is clear to see that those two issues are of high importance to Garcia due to the passion of the vignette and its associated film clip that included cutaways from the dance piece itself superimposed over footage of areas of South America's vast rainforests. The ballet was a more traditional affair displaying a significant amount of pointe work that was fascinating to watch, with respect given for the performance’s quality, but also dedication to the craft if the serious concentration on many of the performer’s face’s is anything to go by. Furthermore, one noticeable point must be made that it was clear a number of the dancers were truly enjoying themselves. Whether it was due to the full house or the good performances, there was a great deal of good will in the performance space that came out in the energy in the dancer’s efforts. The ensemble should be pleased with their hard work. All the age groups were given the opportunity to perform what is a difficult artistic medium.
