Prepare your emotions for a dramatic Greek tragedy featuring the fateful love of Orpheus and Eurydice, but with a contemporary twist, while also accompanied with plenty of Bruce Springsteen hits and lyrically beautiful original songs from the duo. The dramatic and emotionally-engulfing ORPHEUS comes together with only two performers, Alex and Phil, with Alex performing the majority of the show with poetic and engaging spoken word, while gently Phil sings and plays the acoustic guitar at varying spots throughout that relate to Alex’s tales.  In Alex’s rewrite of the ancient legend of Orpheus and Eurydice and their fateful love, and celebrating his birthday. Alex exchanges a setting of historic Greek mythology with the contemporary lanes of North Yorkshire in England on a Saturday night out with the boys - a night out filled with cheap pints, hitting on women with terrible pick-up lines, Jaeger chasers and karaoke where Bruce Springsteen is being played. But, this is also the night of Dave’s life-changing romantic encounter with Eurydice. This encounter changes everything for Dave, someone who has only grown up in a monotone world where he doesn’t quite seem to fit and connection is hard, but Eurydice makes that all change. When a devastating tragedy strikes, Dave has to be honest with himself about how far he will go for this love, one that has helped him learn how to hold another, and be held in return. Bruce Springsteen classics are played throughout by the talented and heartfelt Phil, including a connecting audience sing-along to the hit Dancing in the Dark. Classic tunes like The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back and Whitney Houston’s powerful How Will I Know. A musical delight also comes from the show’s original songs with poetic lyrics like “Imprint me, Impress upon my skin” and “you colour rainbow, every gentle hue, colour me in”. The venue is one of the highlights of the show, as you cross the bridge across the lake to the small, green island that sits in the middle of Rymill Park. The early evening light gently dapples through the leaves, fairy lights dangle above, and ducks contently quack around you as a gentle breeze runs through the branches above. The venue is magical, just like Dave and Eurydice’s love. The seating is also different, with two rows of chairs facing each other, while allowing for a gap between them, and this is the stage for the two performers. At times you can be pulled from deep within this dramatic story, especially as there is a show concurrently taking place on the water’s edge nearby, but for most of the performance it is hard to not be totally engulfed by this emotional tragedy. It will make you laugh, it will make you sigh, it will make you weep - there are plenty of emotions to experience within ORPHEUS, plus, you’ll find yourself enamoured with the magic of the Rymill Lake venue during this contemporary take on a powerful and tragic love story.
