As we throw ourselves back in to the wonderful excitement that Adelaide Fringe brings to our fair city, discussion always centres around which shows will be the ‘headline’ acts for the festival.

It’s fair to say that Matador sits firmly in the ring of must-watch, high-value productions of international quality. If you’re only going to see one show, make it this one.

Matador promotes itself as a fiery fusion of dance, burlesque & jaw-dropping circus acts. A tale of forbidden love, carnal desires, passion and pain. It’s not wrong.

Matador has brought back the joy that 2020 stole.

The tightly choreographed show puts on a display of epic proportions, in which the dancing, story line, costumes and music, come together in a sensual, exciting performance that leaves the audience breathless.

The performers engaged with the audience throughout the show with eye contact, sensual looks and beaming smiles, and clearly LOVE what they’re doing. While I’m not sure if it was part of the show, or just their excitement to be back on stage, the audience loved it.

The headline couple – the Matador and his seductive love interest – are captivating, however the rest of the cast don’t sit in the shadows, also commanding attention with their incredible dancing and acrobatic skills. Together, they form a group which commands your attention from start to finish.

Incredible circus acts woven through the story line broke up the dancing, which made up the majority of the show, and the talent of the cast was evident. The finely tuned acts showcased that fact that the Matdor performers clearly didn’t spend lock down enjoying Netflix and wine like the rest of us…

Matador is a spectacular parade of bodies, music and talent infused with messages of self-love and acceptance. It’s what we all need right now.

Be prepared to leave without a voice, knowing you’ve Fringe’d right.
