Velvet Rewired ★★★★★
If you want to see a show that is quintessentially Adelaide Fringe, then this is a must see show for you – think sequins, glamour, cabaret, live music, dancing and circus acts. Velvet Rewired packs a punch with a 75 minute show with a bit of everything to suit all tastes.
At the helm of it all is the iconic Marcia Hines, who doesn’t look like she ever left Studio 54 nightclub back in the 70s! She makes even the most complex vocals look easy, and we are treated to a plethora of legendary reimagined disco numbers including ‘Born to be Alive’, ‘Don’t Leave Me this way’, ‘It’s Raining Men’, ‘If You Could Read My Mind’ and ‘Turn the Beat Around’.
Also on vocals is Tom Sharah, who does a harrowing, slowed down rendition of ‘Boogie Wonderland’, all while we are amazed by some magical aerial artistry.
The aerial acrobatics featuring Beau Sargent and Harley Timmermans will leave your mouth agape in wonder, and are perfectly matched to each disco number. Roller-skating acrobats Sven and Jan do an amazing job of making you equally wanting to look away in fear, yet also captivatingly mesmerised. The front few rows actually had audience members leaning back away from the stage during their death-defying stunts for fear of something going awry!
Award-winning director and creator Craig Ilott has done a spectacular job on this show. It will have you delving through your wardrobe for those bell bottoms and paisley shirts! Make sure you catch it before Adelaide Fringe Festival winds up on March 19th.
