ORPHEUS ★★★★☆

Perched on the picturesque island in the middle of Rymill Park Lake, sit back and be taken through a riveting but tragic love story about Dave and Eurydice – a reimagining of legendary Greek mythology to the soundtrack of Bruce Springsteen!

Alex Wright is our narrator and Phil Grainger provides vocals and guitar to this heartbreaking tale. Both performers wrote this modern re-telling of Greek mythology back in 2016 and have been performing it all over the world ever since.

Wright’s narrative will have you conjuring up images from Pubs to Karaoke Bars to Hades, as he is able to eloquently illustrate Dave’s fate and that of Eurydice. All the while Grainger is providing the soundtrack, which will have you humming and singing along without you even realising, depicting how colourless Dave’s life was until he met Eurydice on his 30th birthday.

It is a simple structure, with no props other than a book and a guitar, no microphone or lights and various distractions and noises, yet somehow you find yourself engulfed in the story, unperturbed and unaware by the distractions of other show goers and traffic passing by not so far away.

Even if you’re not a fan of Greek mythology or Bruce Springsteen, this show is definitely worth a watch. ORPHEUS is a powerfully performed piece, that is highly engaging, bringing a modern twist and new audience to classic Greek mythology.
