From the creators of ‘The Alphabet of Awesome Science’, You Are A Doughnut comes to us in the form of a biology class, taught by the straight-laced and serious Oesoph A Gus (Rod Schultz) and the goofy, fun-loving Dewey Dean (PJ Oaten). It seems that the show has undergone some workshopping since its appearance at the 2022 Fringe Festival, and that has only improved the show since I last saw it, refining some overly-wordy parts, adding a few songs and ensuring it hits all the right beats.
The show opens with two substitute teachers, each with wildly different approaches to teaching, finding they have been booked to teach the same biology class. They decide to team up and the result is a chaotic mix of instruction about the digestive system and fart jokes. The show includes musical theatre style songs, various short segments such as a game show skit, a cooking show and more.
The show manages to be accessible to a wide age range, using both scientific language and straightforward analogies, without ever reaching too far or becoming boring for any group. On the contrary, every second of the show is action packed, and kids and adults alike were thoroughly entertained, particularly by the leaf blowers rigged to shoot ping pong balls (it has a purpose, trust me).
Shultz and Oaten work well together, blending well vocally and portraying a nice contrast between their characters. They have excellent stage presence and comic timing, and keep the show moving at a rocketing pace.
If you want a show that is fun for kids and adults alike, while also being educational, this is a must-see this Fringe. And if that isn’t enough to sway you, if you’ve ever wondered whether you actually can set farts on fire, this is where you can find out.
