The collaboration you never knew you needed in your life finds the classic music of The Beatles mixed with sultry burlesque dancing, to provide a fun-filled night of exotic entertainment. The brainchild of Viola Verve, the Nineteen Ten venue was the perfect backdrop for this unique show, as the sold-out crowd got to experience life in the swinging sixties. Hosted by the incomparable Lyra La Belle, our evening started off with a gorgeously curated cocktail list (using the finest Australian spirits) before we welcomed to the stage Millie De Sade performing to the song Blackbird. What I particularly enjoyed about the show was that we got a little bit of history and trivia about the songs before the dancers appeared onstage. For example, the song Blackbird had nothing to do with a bird but was actually written about the racial strife happening in the American South in the 1960s. As Lyra put it best “there’s nothing like learning something while getting a good dose of T&A!” Surprisingly to this reviewer, the audience was of the slightly older generation than the usual 1910 club crowd. It made a lot of sense though because this was the music that they grew up with, and everyone took great delight in singing along to the songs as the dancers were performing. Over the course of a quick-fire 70 minutes, we witnessed Delila Del Amour starting a Revolution, Aleksandra the Great heading Back to the USSR and Lucy Lovegun Coming Together, along with Lizzy Baker (I Don’t Know), Remi Reign (Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?), and even Lyra herself twisting and shouting. Viola Verve stole the show though, performing as a slightly unhinged ex-girlfriend to Oh Darling! before closing the show in a gorgeously bright tie-dye dress with Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I wasn’t around in the 60s, but I bet they weren’t as fun as this! FOUR STARS ****
