A frequent presence on the Adelaide Fringe circuit, Dom is back to enchant audiences with a cheeky sense of humour and an abundance of sleight of hand. Fans who witnessed his work in the Purple Rabbit will be delighted to see him take the stage with a full hour to make use of his wide array of magical talents.
The show immediately clues us into the magician's playful sense of humour with the opening act and Dom’s greatest claim to fame: making pints of beer magically appear out of a seemingly empty paper bag. From there, we’re treated to a series of improbable and hilarious feats involving card tricks, Monopoly money and an experiment combining a (un?)lucky audience member’s phone and a blender. This builds to an impossibly fun finale where he dials the ambition and absurdity up to 11, using a wallet, a condom and a carefully-chosen Disney track.
Dom makes full use of a stage that incorporates some fun lighting, music and inspired use of the Siri voiceover. He interweaves his act with his own childhood tales and aspirations of magic superstardom, giving us a small dose of humility before he wows us again with another impossible trick.
The audience participation is top-notch; Dom cleverly sows seeds of mischief across the show by inviting audience members to participate in the fun. The card trick segments are particularly delightful as he goes to great creative lengths to reveal each chosen card (at one point completely hands-free).
With a charismatic presence and a warm level of engagement to pull the crowd in, it’s clear to anyone watching that Dom is a natural performer. There was nary a moment where he wasn’t generating a laugh or a collective sense of awe.
Fake Wizard seamlessly blends magic, comedy and showmanship into one unforgettable performance. Magic shows don’t get much better than this.
