Green Leaf Lounge are one of SA’s primary local creators of the Japanese-style Kokedama balls. It’s a gorgeous potted plant wrapped in a ball of moss and twine, the style being closely related to bonsai and often considered to be a type of garden art. As part of Paintelaide’s series of interactive workshops, Green Leaf Lounge owner, Krystie Stribling, presented a once-off workshop on how to make your own Kokedama ball. Krystie’s sociable style and ability to simplify instructions made her an ideal instructor and host. Her personal attention to each participant, general sense of humour, and affable nature provided for an engaging and enjoyable hour that resulted in each participant having their own hand-crafted plant to take home. Outside of the Fringe, Stribling runs workshops through the year, and her experience shone through as she imparted invaluable tips and information about winding the twine, what products to use, caring for the plants, etc. Paintelaide’s central location on Prospect Road, just out of the city, is a welcoming and colourful space, replete with a mini wine bar and plenty of open space and natural light. If the enjoyment and smooth coordination of the Kokedama ball making workshop is an indication of what to expect from the final two upcoming paint workshops, then they’re sure to be just as much a treat.
