You only need to hear the first few bars of Sir Duke, Isn’t She Lovely, Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours or Superstition and people will start humming or singing along. Stevie Wonder is a master at writing very catchy songs that have left their mark on the music industry. He never once let the fact he was blind stop him from writing and producing music, becoming a huge influence in shaping R&B music into what we know it today. His music is honest and holds some wonderful messages about love and life.  At this year's Fringe, Adelaide’s premier entertainment group, The Cast, celebrate the life and music of Stevie Wonder in a sixty minute, high energy performance that should be at the top of your Fringe viewing list. The Cast comprise of eighteen of the best musicians and vocalists, all who call South Australia home. They are world class musicians who are all at the top of their field. â€¨â€¨This production is jam packed with more Stevie Wonder hits than you could believe would fit into sixty minutes. The show opens with a soulful piano solo by Musical Director Dave Goodwin as String Source (a local SA string quartet) join in as the full band layers over the top with a stunning Stevie Wonder inspired overture. This is accompanied by local artist Alexandra Bellas painting a stunning portrait of the man himself. This is a brilliant set up to the rest of the show. Chloe Castledine opens the night as your host, and she sets the pace for the next hour with a string of Stevie Wonder’s biggest hits, including a sensational performance of Superstition. Castledine’s voice is a knockout. From impressive belting top notes, to warm pulled back moments, it is clear to see why she is one Adelaide’s busiest vocalists. Castledine was soon joined by Brian Ruiz, who’s soulful and sparkling personality soon had the audience grooving in their seats. The vocal treats didn’t stop there, Winston Howard, Henry Olonga and Alexandra Bella each brought their own flair to this production. A fun and crowd favourite was during Isn’t She Lovely where The Cast band’s trombonist (Aaron Deanshaw) and percussionist (Dan Ryan) took over the vocals. The Cast band’s musicianship is exceptional. They are tight and boy can this band play. The Cast band are a constant reminder that we have so much phenomenal talent right here in SA. We need to do more to support our home grown talent. The arrangements throughout this show, by Dave Goodwin and Chloe Castledine, are next level. They capture the magic of Stevie’s hits, but bring a fresh and reimagined take on these classics. Personal favourite would be the hauntingly beautiful, stripped back version of For Once In My Life. With soaring string lines throughout, and the warmth of Henry Olonga voice, it brings a whole new meaning to this amazing piece of music.  Wonderfull! A Celebration of Stevie Wonder sadly closes this coming Sunday, February 26, so if you are looking for a great night out at the Fringe this weekend, I urge you to purchase a ticket and support some truly wonderful home grown talent. The Cast are also back at The Pyramid @ Fool’s Paradise from Friday March 3rd with another brilliant production, 80’s Ladies. This too, should be high on your Fringe list for 2023. You will find it hard to resist the urge to dance in your seat.
