“Welcome to the 21st Century where dating is now done through apps we download to our smart devices and red flags decorate our single lives. If we don’t laugh about it, we’ll cry.” Luckily, this is a topic that many comedians have attempted to tackle and Tinder’s Least Wanted does exactly that. Local stand-up talents Jono Makai and Sophy Nassar deliver their horror stories to the audience to highlight the fact that us ‘single and looking’ folk are not alone in the shit storm that is dating. Appearing on stage holding a fish (translation: Alpha Provider) Jono kicks off the routine talking about his experience with dating apps. He handballs to Sophy to bring her musings to the table. The show relies heavily on audience interaction, the duo even bringing a member of the audience on to the stage to tell a story for the prize of a fish trophy (gold foil wrapped chocolate fish but same thing) They ask audience members lots of questions about their personal experiences from couples to groups of friends, to (shock horror) people on actual dates (weird choice for an actual date but ok) and bounce a fair bit of clever improvisation from it. Because the show relies so much on audience interaction which is clever and facilitated brilliantly by Jono and Sophy, the downfall is that if you get a quiet night or a quiet audience it can miss the mark. I was also really wanting more juicy stories from the pair, especially Sophy who talked more about her family and Arab heritage (which she also has a Show about, The Aussie Arab and considering this routine it looks very promising) then her dating adventures. All in all, it’s a great concept and execution that needs a little fine tuning and one hell of a rowdy audience to reach its full potential.
