Lovers of escape rooms will no doubt be aware of the Adventure Rooms outfit across the Mall from H&M. They’re one of our mainstay escape room outfits and were one of the first ongoing escape room complexes in the city.
For the few who don’t know, the themed rooms give you one hour to solve a series of puzzles to escape through the designated exit point. For safety reasons, you’re not actually locked in the room, although your first puzzle may be something as simple as finding the key to escape handcuffs or a prison cell.
The rooms house from 2- 7 players, although the more you have, the less puzzles individual participants get to solve. In the normal course of the year, your booking secures the room exclusively for your group. For the Adelaide Fringe however, it’s a shared adventure where other parties can book the same session until it’s at capacity. This is an important consideration for those who may not want to team up with strangers or have their group outnumbered by a larger party.
Of the six themed rooms available at Adventure Rooms Adelaide, only the Mafia Room is reserved for the Fringe. It’s rated 5/5 for difficulty – their most difficult room to solve. Supposedly. If you’ve enjoyed some of their other rooms then you’ll find most of the puzzles in this one familiar. Unlike the original experiences of previous escape rooms I’ve enjoyed, this one was recycled right down to the layout and decorations of rooms. There was very little originality and aficionados are sure to be grossly disappointed that so little effort has been put into offering something new.
For those less experienced, the Mafia room is, in fact, a complex and exciting game. The puzzles get increasingly more difficult and it takes the collective brainpower of a group to solve them. The game is well designed, the rooms are fully realised with furniture, wall hangings and props, and the energy is palpable as participants race against the clock to reach the end.
With so many exciting interactive experiences on offer this Fringe, any decision to try this one comes down to how many of their other rooms you may have tried.
