See Do Eat Review

I must admit that I’m writing this review with a slight bit of bias. You see, I interviewed the main star, writer and creator of Somnia, Eva, a couple of years ago and found her to be very honest and upfront about her illness narcolepsy. Describing the show in her own words didn’t paint a full picture of how good her Adelaide Fringe show Somnia actually was. It tackled Eva’s narcolepsy in quite a dramatic and entertaining fashion and won over audiences with its amazing aerial performances, scary reveals and costuming flair. Although I understood the premise (because I had interviewed Eva beforehand), some of the feedback I received from audience members was that they enjoyed it but didn’t necessarily understand what it all meant. Well in the third iteration of Somnia, titled enSomnia, that all changes!
Strutting onto the stage in a gorgeous long robe Eva welcomes the crowd into The Pyramid and talks to us about her narcolepsy and the effects it has on her (something she’s never done before). It’s comforting and informative and makes you feel more like part of the show, as well as explains what the eager audience can expect from this one-hour performance. From then on it kicks into high gear, as we watch different interpretations of her dreams, nightmares and everything in between. A beautiful display of aerial mastery on a crescent shape moon, a glorious chain dance, and an amazing aerial bed performance were just some of the acts that left the audience thrilled. But it was the raw energy of the Night Demon with their long nails, seductive dancing and an angle grinder that got the loudest cheers.
While some Fringe acts sit on their laurels, bringing back the same show year after year, enSomnia is a demonstration of Eva and her cast’s constant evolution. Never staying the same, always changing, and constantly striving to be better. This is a show you shouldn’t sleep on this Adelaide Fringe!
