A classic Fringe show that will never disappoint – Rouge is back with its jaw-dropping acrobatics and powerful vocals, and is still leaving its audiences feeling rather hot under the collar. When thinking of classic Fringe shows that are absolute must-sees every year, it is hard to go past the seductive, inclusive and decadently delectable, Rouge. Think jaw-dropping acrobatics, topless lampshade hoop routines, operatic vocals, cracking whip-play, and a very limited amount of clothing. The show is also beautifully queer, and a space that celebrates all kinds of relationships and sexualities, which are cheered on throughout the night. Performers sail through the air on a high trapeze, while seductive fire-play draws gasps from the audience as it is paired daringly with an enthusiastic body. Shibari rope bondage combines with sweet-as-honey vocals, performers flirt dangerously with each other while trapezing around within a Cyr wheel (a human-sized metal wheel), and heads somehow balance on heads while defying the laws of physics – there is just so much packed into this one show! The soundtrack also has everyone hooked, with bangers like ‘Bang Bang’ by Adrianna Grande and Jessie J, and David Guetta and Nicki Minaj’s popular ‘Turn Me On’ pairing perfectly with impressive pec-dancing and enthusiastic twerking. These upbeat and energetic scenes contrast successfully with moments of slower, dramatic instrumentals paired with the operatic vocals of our very-own local star, Michaela Burger (though you can definitely still expect some humour to pop through and surprise you). Not only are the skin-to-skin moves sexy, but the outfits add to the sensual flair of the show – think skin-tight and diamante-laden black pants, sky-high lace-up black heeled boots, and plenty of tight underwear. Singer Michaela Banas’ outfits are the most dramatic of the show, including a long and slinky blood-red dress, large hair-pieces including open black fans, and a voluminous red sparkly chiffon dress fit for a cabaret Queen. If you’re after a bit more naughty, after-dark behaviour, you’re lucky enough to have the option of late-night debauchery of Rouge Goes Rogue which plays not long after in the same venue at 10:30pm. Rouge is a classic Fringe show, packed full of jaw-dropping acrobatics, belting vocals, plenty of humour, and indiscriminatory love, that will leave you feeling hot under the collar and simply longing for more!
