This show is exactly what you’re imagining – it’s DreamWork’s famous and much beloved 2001 family film, Shrek, but in the style of naughty, late-night burlesque!
All of your favourite characters from the film come to life on the stage in front of your very eyes in Swamplesque. You’ve, of course, got your headliner characters – Shrek, Donkey, Princess Fiona (also known as Princess No.3), and the evil Lord Farquaad. But, joining their sexy adventure is also the innocent Gingerbread Man (and his nipple-covering gumdrop buttons), Lord Farquaad’s servant Magic Mirror, Donkey’s beloved Dragon, and even the hooded Thelonious (a torturer and executioner under Lord Farquaad's service) makes a leggy appearance.
Each individual routine presents a bit of background to each character, such as the Magic Mirror having an identity crisis while dancing around with LED lights to Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’. Each brings something new to the stage, from fire to green feathered fans, and all will have you cackling with laughter - who doesn’t want to see a life-size Gingerbread Man sultrily strip while wearing huge platform heels and dancing to the Pussycat Dolls song ‘Buttons’? Plus, Shrek in a thong doing the splits – yes please!
Classic tunes are remixed to match varying routines and the audience can’t help but sing along –from Queen’s classic ‘Somebody to Love’ for the single (and needing a root) Fiona, to Dragon’s dramatic performance of the Conchita (of Eurovision fame) song, ‘Rise Like A Phoenix’. Plus, Donkey and Dragon get a little bit intimate as the Righteous Brother’s ‘Unchained Melody’ plays, à la the pottery scene in ‘Ghost’. A little more drama could have been presented when Shrek and Fiona finally get together, but this is a minor detail in relation to the quality of the rest of the show.
An absolute highlight of the show is, unsurprisingly, the brilliant array of creative costumes! Donkey is as glamorous as ever with over-lined lips, huge hair and a diamante-covered one-piece, while Shrek is true to character, ears and all, but with some extra sparkly green and skimpy bling hiding underneath his onion-like layers. Plus, there’s a great example of how to style nipple-tassels with billowing pantaloons, if you were curious.
There’s a reason that Swamplesque sold out last year at Adelaide Fringe, so if you missed it then, make sure you don’t miss it this year. You may never look at Shrek the same way again – but, is that really a bad thing?
