Let’s get ready to rumble! Ding ding ding In the blue corner, there is Adam Page, a multi-instrumentalist, composer, music educator and record producer. In the red corner, we have Gene Peterson, a masterful percussionist, extraordinary pianist, and masterful percussionist. The two nemeses fight in a music battle royale to see who can out-play the other. Set in a boxing ring, with instruments strewn everywhere, Page and Peterson take turns to one-up each other with their musical skills. They play live using a loop pedal to record layers of music. The result is a series of innovative and uniquely original compositions. In addition to his sax, Page plays the flute, ukulele, zucchini, a microphone, a bottle of water, his beard and a handful of other instruments I have never seen before. It is extraordinary to watch as random noises become melodic tunes. Peterson dazzles on the drums, keyboards, squeaky toys, a pumpkin, pineapple, and watermelon, among other instruments. He sometimes sings, sometimes raps and often twirls his drumsticks. His talent is indisputable. The two traverse through songs about beards, Keith Richard Miller and the Gene pool, which are equally comical as they are ingenious. While their piano/ saxophone/ drum instrumental duets emphasise their exceptional musicianship. Add a layer of humour to this, and the only winner decreed in this battle is the audience. LOOP THE LOOP is an unprecedented musical comedy show. Starring two of Australia’s virtuosic musicians, it is unconventional, whimsical and oozes talent. It will simultaneously have your jaw agape in amazement while you bop in your seat. A must-see.
