Words by Your Local Hok. We all have fond and embarrassing memories of sex education classes in high school. But why is there a lack of sex education classes for adulthood when we need it the most? Jamie Alexandra brings you an insightful hour of sex education. Performed through the medium of cabaret and burlesque, the show features her band of STI’s, the multi-faced nature of pleasure, the current state of consent culture, and lustrous burlesque. Although Alexandra is no qualified sexologist, you can think of her as a sex life coach. The issues surrounding sex which she discusses throughout the show are intricate and nuanced. Using a (sex) flower as an analogy of the biology, physiology, psychology, and all the other ologies that intertwine when it comes to sex, she de-flowers each petal as she runs through each of the variables which influences our experience and desire of sex. It is evident that Alexandra has done her research on the diversity of sexuality, which is reflected in her detailed explanations of omnisexuality and afro sexuality. Alexandra’s stage presence and vocals are sultry and she embodies the theme of her show seamlessly. Her band of STI’s also have a good stage presence and each have their own quirks and talents (however need some more life experience tassel twirling and gagging). The aspect of sexual consent and the toxic culture and unjust legislation surrounding sexual consent in South Australia are brought to light by Alexandra, to which she has created a petition to change the sexual consent laws in South Australia. The fluidness of consent is effectively conveyed by Alexandra and makes it clear that consent can be given or withdrawn at any time. Alexandra’s burlesque routines become more intense as the show progresses through each of the topics she touches on throughout sex education and in a sense, the climax of her routine seems to parallel with the closing stages of the show as she reveals all. Regardless of your gender, sexual preference, kink, or your body’s ability, the message is clear from Alexandra, everyone deserves to feel pleasure. Alexandra set out to make sex education sexy, and she has most definitely achieved this through her show. The (sex) education of Jamie Alexandra is empowering, educational, and diverse. Rating: ★★★★★
