Hugh Sheridan – My Way 17/03/2022 – Moa - Gluttony I have seen and reviewed the California Crooners Club on a number of occasions where Hugh Sheridan wowed audiences with 3 other singers including America’s Got Talent sensation “Johnny Manuel”. The crooners were a bit hit with fans and had the recipe just right. This outing for Hugh unfortunately just didn’t hit the mark and our home town boy struggled to pull off the vocals without the strength of a larger singing troupe. Often referring to his amazing father Denis Sheridan was a rare insight into the beautiful and large family he is a part of. The material was at times a little obscure and self indulgent and even the Anthony Newley penned, “Who Can I turn to” was more of a parody that again just didn’t make the grade. The dialogue felt unrehearsed and did not really connect the dots. The selection of material had no theme and did not build or have any true direction. There was an awkward moment when Hugh asked for a picture of his wonderful father to be put up on screen and the sound and lighting staff just ignored him. A guest spot by Steven Oliver and the wonderful Michael Griffith made some ground in lightening the somewhat depressive mood of Sheridan on stage. The real star of the evening was Maiya Sykes, an American import who had the vocal power and control that Sheridan unfortunately lacked. Maiya had all the runs, texture and personality and could clearly put on her own show but chose to support Hugh in the best possible fashion. Hugh’s band as always was on the money. Even though the show was outdoors (comfy but another mistake), the band were able to provide energy and a great anchor for Sheridan. There was a costume change which just didn’t suit the moment and left the crowd wondering why. I have heard and seen Hugh do so much better work, even the show titled, “My Way” with a funky beat felt awkward and Hugh strained to hit many of the notes sounding hoarse at times more shouting than singing. The early timeslot in daylight did not suit what could have been a great show. Hugh should go back to the formula that made California Crooners the success that it was and bring back the playful crooner that we love and know so well. 3 stars Reviewer – Stephen Foenander Adelaide Review Team #adlfringe #adelaidereviewteam #hughsheridan https://adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix/hugh-sheridan-my-way-af2022
