There are many accordionists who have achieved notoriety among avid accordion lovers like myself; Lawrence Welk, Myron Floren, Weird Al Yankovic. But few, if any, can lay claim to the title of international superstar. That's where Hans really takes the crown, runs with it, and gives Lawrence Welk a run for his money. But the ingeniousness behind combing Hans with an eighteen piece orchestra must be admired here and there's no better show in town where you can see that than Hans: A Night At The SYMPH-honey!

As I walked in, the stage was set with large digital screens prominently showing the word 'Willkommen'. I'm initially thinking, "perhaps I should have brushed up on my German" as I haven't spoken it in a while. Fortunately, Hans speaks to his Aussie audience in my more comfortable tongue of English.

The first set was, unfortunately, plagued by an all too common problem for a theatre: technically difficulties. But the orchestra, dance ensamble, stage crew, and (most of all) the resilient Hans worked through said issues.

The show was a mix of stand-up comedy, visual media, classical music, pop songs, and show tunes from a variety of musicals including The Book of Mormon, The Sound of Music, and Funny Girl. Ultimately, it's a variety of entertainment to fill two hours of your evening.

Hans' comedy is clever and is deeply rooted in the show's structure. For example, he explains in the first set that he's registered the event as a sports event to circumvent certain COVID-19 restrictions. As a result, the drinks are expensive and the interval is referred to as 'Half Time'.

The orchestra is a powerful addition that really makes this show possible. I'm personally a lover of classical music (particularly opera) and I'm always joyed to see an orchestra take the stage, especially when they compliment the powerful stage presence of a superstar like Hans.

But, is the show good? Yes, it’s fabulous. There’s no words to describe exactly how much talent you can see on Hans’ stage. The musicians are just a part of that. The dancers, the technical crew, the orchestra, etc. It all comes together in this one big show and it’s a truly spectacular way to bring an end to Adelaide Fringe 2022.

4.5/5 stars.
