A Cat Amongst The Pigeons, with its program of middle-of-the-road classics and sincere originals, isn’t going to ruffle many feathers.

Combining the forces of Adelaide Hills duo Tin Can Alley with Heaven Knows Acapella, this concert ranged from covers of well-known tunes by Bob Dylan, Talking Heads and Patti Smith to Tin Can Alley’s catchy Hole in my Shoe.

The first half of the program featured the more emotional numbers. The conviction of the performers was evident, although the execution was lacking in polish.

Country-style vocals, saturated in vibrato, from Tin Can Alley didn’t always blend with the more mellow vocals of Heaven Knows, and there were intonation issues peppered throughout the first few songs.

Acapella songs were more successful. If it be Your Will was particularly touching, with nuanced phrasing.

The mood of the concert was lightened up with a trio of comic songs injecting humour into the second half.

Comic timing of the performers was excellent, although the “humour” of the 1930s song Hunting Tiger would perhaps have been better left in the previous century.
