Reuben Kaye The Butch is Back ★★★★★
In a world filled with war, fire, floods, famine and a pandemic who can you count on to ride in side saddle in his sparkly pink faux eighteenth-century-style ball gown skirt (complete with his own image on the back – sorry spoilers!) and save the day? The answer of course is Reuben Kaye!
The butch truly is back with his six piece band The Close Contacts, in over 75 minutes of glamour, cabaret, stand-up comedy and heart felt monologues that can only be described as pure poetic wizardry!
Kaye takes us on a journey through his formative years as a young, queer, “Jew-ish” boy in the 90s with a mix of storytelling, songs and comedy, all the while accompanied by his band. Thrown into the mix Kaye also takes on current issues like the state election, government corruption and the pandemic.
Kaye showcases his vocal chops with some fabulous renditions of old classics. Prowling through the audience with his pony-tail mic and lashes so long he could fly away, he makes sure that despite the large venue, it really does feel like an intimate show. And just when you think Kaye is getting deep and his subject matter is bleak, he completely flips the vibe by pulling out his one liners and showing us why he truly is the king of cabaret!
A little bit spicy, at times sweet, often very salty but extremely palatable (if you’re not easily offended of course!), it’s easy to see why Reuben Kaye has won so many awards. If you haven’t already, do yourself a favour and head down to The Babylon at The Garden of Unearthly Delights and see what all the fuss is about, you won’t be disappointed!
