“What a funny old fellow is Humphrey, he gets in all manner of strife”. “Say hello to Humphrey Bear”. If you grew up in South Australia in the 60s, 70s or 80s it’s a safe bet that you knew one or both of these greetings and the fantabulous bear they were about. This phenomenal 4 year old bear (he never gets any older – wish I knew his secret) has had a few names: Humphrey, Humphrey Bear, Humphrey B. Bear and even Humphrey B. Bear Esquire. Unfortunately, for a while he became the bear equivalent to the Grand Prix and was snatched away to Melbourne. The good news is that he has returned home in his very own Fringe show, Put On Your Dancing Shoes With Humphrey, bringing with him two very talented ‘friends’, Rohan Watts and Mel (Melissa) McCaig to act as co-hosts. This show is an absolute delight for the young and old – and the in-between! The concept is simple but very original: five ‘Humphrey’ coins are put into a juke box to play a highly popular song from five eras – 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Although the littlies weren’t around in those time periods, trust me, they will know each single one. As a lot of the joy and fun of the show comes from guessing what a non-verbal 4 year old bear is trying to tell us, I won’t give the game away by saying what the songs are. But, a hint to one of them – have your Macarena skills handy. At 60 minutes long, this show just rockets along with no dull moments whatsoever. This is due to the high energy levels from Rohan, Mel and Humphrey, which never flag. The joy and fun of performing from these three just swamps the audience and all age groups have a ball. No one is left out, with all three making sure that everyone has the time of their lives (and no, that’s not a hint to one of the songs). After the show, hang around and make sure you have your photo taken with funny, furry Humphrey (however old you are).
