I'm about to review a show by someone who I consider to be Adelaide's most highly regarded and potent theatre reviewer. Here goes - wish me luck.

Peter Goers is one of Adelaide's most interesting people. He's travelled all over the world yet chooses to live in Adelaide because he loves it so much. His long association with theatre, newspapers, and radio give him an endless library of content. He glides easily through the six show of his trilogy in Joyful Strains.

He has a down to earth manner yet commanding presence from the moment the lights come on. Peter could be described as the essential dinner party conversation starter. You know the person who always has a story with a punch line to match anything that's being said.

From actor Peter O'Toole to former and current politicians, even Catholics and Protestants, he manages to skip through stories about them all without once hitting dangerous territory for his audience. I could count the uses of the F word on two hands. That's quite restrained if you ask me.

At one point he mentions his up and coming book from Wakefield Press (out this April). It apparently might be similar to the daybook in which he collects cutting quotes, observations, and other interesting stuff. It's from this book that some of the funniest jokes of the show are delivered.

Peter's unique voice and timing guides the audience effortlessly from the rude jokes to the silly jokes and from cutting observations to being touched with emotion. There's plenty to be entertained by - with a few surprises thrown in.

The Holden Street Theatres are situated in an old Anglican Church Complex in Hindmarsh. It's an easily accessible location that might remind most of the audience of their youth. I say this because the show is self-proclaimed as being particularly for old people.

Never mind the age gap. You won't be able to work out what it is anyway. This is for an older crowd but you don't have to be old to enjoy a laugh about people and their behaviour.

Peter Goers is a walking encyclopedia filled with knowledge of genuine people from genuine places all over the world, particularly his beloved South Australia. And Broken Hill.
