Roald Dahl’s books have such a following, it’s no surprise that a show endorsed by his literary estate is a hit. Playing in Gluttony, an audience made up of mainly primary school aged kids and their parents eagerly embraced the antics of Brenda and Terry played by talented UK actors Nerine Skinner and Robbie Capaldi. These two held a captured audience as they took us on an immersive mission as members of a Secret Organisation known as The Ancient Guild of Taletenders. We were tasked with saving the words of Roald Dahl’s books because they had started to mysteriously disappear. Lots of audience interaction is guaranteed in this show, because as the actors tell us, without our help, the worlds (and words) of Roald Dahl would be lost. Kids are encouraged to be as silly as possible to initiate Brenda as a Taletender. Highlights of the show include developing the characters of Mr and Mrs Twit, with each half of the audience being pitted against each other in an “ugly off” and perfecting our taletender salute. Most of the children in the audience were encouraged to provide input into the show, demonstrating their love of Roald Dahl’s books. Skinner and Capaldi both harnessed the unruliness of a kid’s audience with the aplomb of schoolteachers and the comedic timing of circus clowns. A pleasurable hour spent in the company of these skilled performers, it was another professional offering from the team behind Faulty Towers, a dining experience. If you love the books of Roald Dahl or have a kid who has a love of reading, you can’t go past this show.
