The title Adults Only Magic Show really does state what’s in the box with this production. It’s a hilarious combination of adult humour, illusions and unique takes on old favourites of magic shows. Sam Hume and Justin Williams are the duo behind the Showmen and passionate performers on stage. Their comedy, magic stunts, and transitions are all fast-paced with the potential of many ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ moments as they layer together many illusions to boost the distraction elements. The illusions build upon some of the well-known card, escape artistry, and disappearance sets but presented in their own twisted manner, including stunt races with a very adult consequence for the runner up. The adult only humour included in the show is a great addition that didn’t necessarily come across as gimmicky, more so building on the ‘risk’ elements of such a show. There is a high level of audience participation in the different stunts, which at times was a bit clunky to manoeuvre ‘enthusiastic’ guests up onto the stage but overall adds to the engagement and interactivity of the production. Some management of certain guests could speed a couple parts of the show along but that would all be part of the randomised aspects of the show. Within the show there is some backstory from Hume and Williams that shares their time as a magic duo, including the loss of their belongings and restarting from scratch. It gives a nice bonus insight into the human side of the performers in addition their stage characters. Adults Only Magic Show is absolute bonkers fun. It is a chaotic magic show for people wanting to see illusions with a mature rating. It does contain high levels of swearing (a lot from the audience) and some nudity as part of the show. Adults Only Magic Show is in Adelaide until the end of Fringe next month and is on at a couple different locations in Gluttony.
