Come forth and enter the cult of transgenderism, a place where transphobes cease to exist and the uninitiated are converted to transition their gender (not really, unless you want to of course).
Leading the cult is Florian Wild (they/them), a transgender man who graces us with their presence and exuberant gown best described as a recreation of a bloody tampon.
Demystifying scare-mongering depictions of trans people, dating experiences, high school reunions, the daily grind of being a high school teacher, and the intersections of religion and being trans are the wide array of topics and lived experiences which Wild shares throughout the show.
The analogy of the show’s title is that with all the misconceptions and misrepresentations in the world, trans people can be depicted as ‘monsters’ (albeit exquisite ones) in the lens of a cisnormative world.
Along with accompanying melodies and complimentary wit by Oliver Ayres, a variety of sultry drag, cabaret, audience serenading, and comedy are woven together to tell Wild’s story, delivering a highly entertaining and eye-opening perspective into the life of a trans man.
Serious, yet hilarious is Wild’s ability to share critical aspects of their life in a light-hearted manner. There’s some serious s!%t that’s discussed and yet, the audience gets their bang for buck in laughs.
With no shortage of sass at all as they unapologetically strut their stuff and sing their heart out, , Wild feasts on the reactions of their audience to win them over and make them question their gender in a subtle way.
Viewing the show as a transgender woman, there were many aspects of the show which I related to, especially in relation to self-discovery, navigating various social contexts, finding love, coming out at work, and having the freedom to just be and live a simple life. It’s truly wholesome when you feel represented by others like you in the spotlight.
Monster encapsulates an intimate, alluring, and vulnerable hour of trans-glamour, uplifting and educating trans folk and others on the irresistible cult we call transgenderism.
