Is there a better MC anywhere on the planet than Gingzilla? She stalks downstage centre and she has not come to mess around: ‘This is cabaret and the more you give, the more you get.’ She’s giving goddess in a ginger wig, Queen Elizabeth I on meth. ‘Would you like me to seduce you Adelaide?’ she growls and, as one, the audience agree that would be very nice, thank you very much.

There are, of course, lots of great cabaret/circus/comedy combo shows around this Fringe, but Popcorn Underground has the edge due to the sheer skill and talent of the acts. And kudos to those guys, because it’s easy to forget how much blood, sweat and tears goes into their performances: part of the act is making it look easy, after all. But whether it’s Adam Malone swallowing razors, the (frankly unbelievable) roller skating antics of Sven and Jan, Oleg Tatarynov’s stunning bath pole act or J’aiMime’s hilarious balloon bubble girl, each spot is both a little different to the norm and presented by artistes at the top of their game. It’s a billed show too, rather than a drop-in guest roster, so you know the same level of artistry is guaranteed every night. All this, plus the brilliance of Gingzilla: she’s the icing on the cake, but what a flipping tasty cake it is.
