While Fringe chaos takes over much of Adelaide, Oat Milk & Honey is a rare meditative hub right in the heart of the action. Sound Of Circus Australia explores anxiety, connection, and the art of being gentle with yourself through an intoxicating combination of music and movement.
It’s very clear that careful thought has gone into turning the Ukiyo tent into a safe space, which relaxes the audience into the show from the very beginning. Amanda Lee transfixes down to the slightest movement, using impressive acrobatic abilities as a medium for storytelling. Musician Nathan Chettle’s hip hop-tinged soundtrack drives a performance that is as much physical as it is musical; the act of playing the keyboard speaks to us as much as the neurotic motifs and percussion. Chettle is accompanied by the raw, emotional vocals of Ruru, a kind of grounding presence seated on cushions to the side of the stage. Together with the recorded poetry of Cazeaux O.S.L.O., the performers move and work as one in a display of breathtaking connection.
It's always a joy to witness a group of skilled performers coming together to create something new. Oat Milk & Honey reflects the experience of anxiety with sensitivity. Warm, calming and sweet, this show really is a chai tea, with a splash of oat milk and honey.
