Unsettled Painting Workshop
This workshop explores how paint can exist beyond the canvas and frame. Working with acrylic skins, participants will experiment with surface and texture, learning ways to reshape and reuse dried paint through peeling and layering. The process encourages a fresh look at what a painting can be.
You will create at least two acrylic paint skins, one of which will be displayed in the St Peters Gallery foyer for the Adelaide Fringe from opening night on 6 March (6–8 pm) until 11 April.
Suitable for adults aged 18 and over.

Katey Smoker is an Adelaide artist working with paint as both medium and structure. She strips paint from the canvas, casting and assembling it to create forms that examine how paint responds to manipulation, environment and time. The grid often appears as both a framework and a site of disruption, reflecting her interest in control, repetition and the points where things start to slip. With a background in metallurgy and material science, she approaches her practice through material experimentation and scientific enquiry, asking what a painting can be and how paint might exist beyond its surface. Her work has been exhibited across Australia, including Adelaide Contemporary Experimental and the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts.Social media
